James began studying music at the age of 9 when picked up the trumpet in his school band. A rapidly-excelling musical student, James was eager to expand his knowledge: at the age of 11 he began to play the drums. He has since studied with esteemed drum instructors throughought the Greater Boston area including: Dick Dicenso, Brian Kelley, Barry Lit, Greg Settino, Jimmy Pemberton, Ed Warshauer, and Jackie Santos.
He has a diverse musical history which spans the styles of jazz, rock, funk, fusion, hip-hop, Latin, Brazilian, classical, and theatrical percussion styles. He regularly plays around the Greater Boston Area, most notably at the Hatch Shell in Boston with the Harvard Summer Pops Band.
James currently attends the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where he majors in Jazz Studies. There he studies with Thomas Giampietro, Felipe Salles, Catherine Jensen-Hole, and Jeffery Holmes. He is the primary drummer of the University's Chapel Jazz Ensemble, and he regularly plays shows and teaches in the Amherst area.
